Letters From America

releasing 18 AUgust 2026

It began in March 2025. I was sitting in my home in France, watching the news coming out from the USA in horror. It suddenly felt very important that we find a way to preserve and amplify the voices that the US government was working so hard to suppress.

So I offered to be a penpal. To preserve and protect these stories and to share them in the hopes of fostering understanding and connection.

What came back was a portrait of modern America.

From members of communities being actively targeted by their own government.

From people who had lost jobs, lost safety and lost faith in the country they'd spent their whole lives believing in.

People who were scared and showing up anyway.

“These letters let me know the discontent and anger I've felt is not because of my wild imagination or too much social media.”

Digital platforms are vulnerable, as content gets deleted, altered, or buried. Physical letters held outside the United States will not.

One day these letters will form part of the historical record of how ordinary people experienced the fall of American democracy.

Letters from America is a timeless account of how democracies fall, and how ordinary people fight back. This is history in the making, written by the people living it.

This project shares these incredible stories — with personal details removed — so that others can see their own experiences reflected, understand what is happening to people different from them, and feel less alone.
